Athlete Profile: Carol Naugle

How long have you been crossfitting?
5 months. The time has gone by so fast! It has been an incredibly, incredibly awesome and life-changing experience for me. Since the very day I started - I love it and I'm addicted to it! I try to crossfit 5 days a week...at the very least 4 days.

What is your sports history?
Gymnastics. I trained for 13 years during my childhood and adolescence. 6 days a week, 3 and 4...sometimes 5 hours a day. I loved it. No one pushed me into it or made me stay in it. I guess it was my thing. The sacrifices were worth it.

How have you surprised or delighted yourself with CrossFit?
I turned 50 two months ago. I am so grateful that my body can still move. I walked into the CrossFit gym the most overweight and the most out of shape I have ever been in my whole life. I am surprised how quickly I started to feel good about my workouts. Though I was very weak and low on endurance, I got stronger and developed more skills each day. As a child, some of our gymnastics strength training had the same skills as what we do in CrossFit. It is really fun to use those skills again!

What sorts of goals have you set for yourself this year?
1) My weight - I am working with a nutritionist to shed these lingering pounds, 2) endurance and stamina - this is my weakest area. For me, it is a slow process but recently I have seen just a tiny bit of improvement, 3) flexibility and agility, and 4) get my husband into the gym.

What would your favorite WOD look like?
Not sure; I love weight lifting and rowing and bar work like toes-to-bar and pull-ups. I get my best workout when the WOD has something to do with "# of rounds." At this point, I do whatever the WOD is on the whiteboard. I try to get through it as skillfully and as quickly as I possibly can.
